TikTok vs YouTube

by Advit Mittal 01st Nov. 2022

Well, this was one of the most talked about topics during the lockdown period. The discussion started all back in 2020, and since then it has not taken a rest until yet, even after TikTok got banned in India. Well, the case is that it’s not about TikTok vs YouTube, rather it's more about Short Video Content vs Long Video Content. Some people love short-time content as they are less time-consuming, more interesting and believed to transfer more information in a shorter span or duration of time while some love long ones as they are more comprehensive as well as engaging.

Both types of content have a diverse and mixed set of people engaging with them. The audience until then, didn’t use to differentiate a lot between both them. But, many long video content creators published roast videos on short video content creators or so-called influencers. Similarly, the short ones also did and roasted the long ones. Due to this, the discussion came into its very existence. Well, both contents on their terms come with a fixed set of advantages and disadvantages.
Here, in this blog, we will be discussing a few disadvantages of short video content and why it should not be consumed regularly and should be prohibited and banned in India:

1. Reducing Attention Span

The short-video content is believed to be hampering or affecting the overall attention span. As one engages with such type of content, their overall attention span narrows. They became habituated to focusing on a particular thing for just about 30 seconds. After every 30 seconds, they need a change or switch. Scientific studies have also proven this fact.

2. Irrelevancy

People nowadays have started using short videos to post unnecessary stuff. Instead of posting educational, informative or skilful videos, that create awareness or induce motivation amongst viewers, they just record anything and post it on the internet. Manier times the facts published using these reels are also unverified and believed to be spreading fake information.

3. Addicting

Users have become addicted to short video content. The majority of the influencer creating such content create irrelevant and unnecessary dance videos. But, it is not that all of them create such videos. I am talking about the majority ones. They make use of expensive clothing and cars to attract viewers and portray a lavish lifestyle. Youth is spending a major chunk of their time just scrolling through them and wasting their precious time on this. In end, they are gaining nothing, apart from short-term pleasure. As these videos are addicting, many users engage with them and thus it has a deep influence on the mind of youths as well as on people from different age groups. But, creators neglect this very fact and post irrelevant stuff which is affecting the overall thinking ability of the viewers. They are wrongly stereotyping people about everything. Humans become what they engage in or see throughout the day. So, is the thing, happening here.

4. Spreading half information

Due to the time limit, many creators miscut upon all details. As we all are aware of the saying “Half knowledge is worse than no knowledge” so is the case here. Short content creators share half knowledge with the viewers, who might without further research completely believe them. This leads to conveying false and unverified information to viewers.

5. Misguiding

Nowadays, as mobile devices have become very common, even a small kid of just 2-3 years old is exposed to them. It becomes really difficult for parents to keep a track of all the content that their kids are interacting with throughout the day. The reason is: they don’t have enough time or they are not as tech-advanced as their kid is. The kids are exposed to irrelevant and vulgar content where they see people just dancing to whatever song they found on the net. Well, at that age, they are more expected to be engaged with content related to education or something that encourages to them become good human beings. They should be taught more about manners and their culture. They should be taught about mythologies and encouraged to read holy epics. Being exposed to such content at such small ages is not good as their thinking process gets stunted. This leaves an overall bad impression on them. They want to impersonate all these activities and thus fall into the trap of bad company.

6. Wrong Influence

Parents or many content creators have also started using their small kids or pets to create their cute videos just for the sake of gaining views. At such an age, instead of being exposed to the glamorous life of social media influencers, they should be more focused on their academics and basic education mandatory for them. Being constantly in front of the camera might traumatize kids. Giving them so much attention by focusing the camera on them throughout the day and then later retreating when they get older might create anxiety inside them.

Well, now, it is not so that these disadvantages are also with the long video content. Long video content also comes with a cost. But, as short video content is comparatively, easier to make and publish, and requires less time as well as resources, the number of short video creators is more, due to which this problem has become gigantic. Everything done within limits looks good. Anything exaggerated leaves a bad impact and so is the short video content community doing. It is exaggerating all these problems by normalizing this. But, it is not so, that short video content is completely leaving a bad impact. It has employed many people during the covid period. Many hidden talents get a proper stage to showcase their work via these. Many people are also using it to educate people. It's just about the content creators who dance on songs and make the entire short video section toxic. Such people are spoiling the name of the entire short-video content creation community.
